Farmers of north Indian plains have large scale plantation of Populus deltoides on their farm land due to availability of cheap and fast growing plantlets and higher economic gains of timber per unit of land. However they are unaware of its allelopathic interaction with their crops. In the present investigation, therefore, response of different concentrations of leachate of Poplar leaf have been studied on germinating seeds and seedling growth of three rotating crops of the region i.e. wheat, sorghumand black gram. Three doses comprising of 2%,5% and 10% leaf leachates against a distilled water treated control were tested. The effect of leachates was found inhibitory indicating direct proportional relationship with increased application of leaf leachates for all the parameters studied specially in Triticum aestivum cv.UP2338. Phytotoxicity percentage was observed minimum in Vigna mungo cv.PU-19 followed by Sorghum bicolor cv. Hariganga maximum in wheat among all the concentrations of leachates. Maximum fall in vigour index and germination speed was observed in all concentrations of leachates, in wheat followed by Sorghum and Vigna except with 2% leachate treatment to Vigna seeds where a little increase in vigour index and germination speed was observed.
