The importance of gender and its influence on health has led to increasing interest in gender-specific health research and care delivery. This emphasis on gender, which has been termed "the most important human polymorphism," has been enabled by significant sociocultural transformations over the past century. The women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s and subsequent men's movement of the late 1980s and 1990s have raised important questions about the roles of men and women in modern society and the health of men and women is an important component of that dialogue.
