The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), which provides guidance on medicines for use in the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales, has formally proposed a scheme for the multiple myeloma drug bortezomib (Velcade) whereby the product manufacturer will be required to refund the costs of the drug in cases where patients showed a minimal or no response. The move could set a precedent for future funding schemes for phar-maceuticals, particularly those considered to be expensive.
