Six parental lines and 15 F1 hybrid cucumbers produced under 2 different growing environments were used for an analysis of 5 major aromatic substances using genetic models, including additive and dominance effects, as well as the effects of their interaction with the environment. 2E-nonenal, octanol and 2E,6Z-nondienal contents of cucumbers were controlled mainly by both additive and dominant effects, while nonanal and 6Z-nonenal contents were controlled mainly by an additive effect. Broad-sense and narrow-sense heritability of these 5 aromatic substances were low, indicating that selective breeding to improve their levels may be less effective in early generations. High levels of correlation among the 5 aromatic substances were found in cucumbers.
