Molecular phylogenetic studies on members of the Brassica and Raphanus

Phylogenetic relationships among 21 species in the Brassica genus, and Raphanus sativus in the family Brassicaceae, were estimated from sequences of the internal transcribed spacers, ITS1 and ITS2, in the nuclear DNA and the 5.8S rRNA gene, as well as from chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequences from the trnL intron, the trnL-F region, and chloroplast microsatellite (cpSSR) markers. The data from all three molecular datasets indicated that the "B genome" and "A/C genomes" of Brassica spp. originated via two different evolutionary pathways. Combining the nuclear and chloroplast sequences, Raphanus might be a hybrid between members of the "Nigra" and "Rapa/Oleracea" lineages, with the latter as the female parent. The chloroplast sequences and cpSSR data suggested that the cytoplasmic parents of the amphidiploid species B. carinata and B. juncea were B. nigra and B. rapa, respectively.
