The AGS garden at pershore: Cynthia and Bryan Wardley discuss the development of the Society's new garden at Pershore

As is appropriate for a society, the AGS garden at Pershore is the creation of a large number of people, most of them volunteers. These volunteers, a leant, more a collection of talented individuals who came and went at times. Naturally enough, theyoften had different opinions st) it is a triumph for restraint, good manners and diplomacy that anything was achieved at all. The story begins in 1991, soon after the construction of the new office buildings. Michael Upward, our then Secretary, aided byAlan Cook, established; next to the car park (on the site of the present rock garden) for choice rescued from Chelsea exhibits. Alan Cook had recently retired from a position in charge of the alpine garden and order beds at the Royal Botanic Garden: In1994 Pershore College set its horticultral students a competition to rock garden. The winner was Richard Mercer. He was given the chance his design, an impressive pile of very large, reddish, Forest of Dean st rocks donated by the Mine Train Quarry. Forfurther details about this, and photographs, see Michael's article in the Bulletin 64 : 384-7. Mich constructed a border near to the side of the building using Cotswold stone by Joe Elliott, and this remains, as do the greenhouse and the access frames. The East Surrey Group generously gave financial and practical assistance. At this point financial restraints were suddenly relieved when the society a large bequest from Stirt Piggin, who stipulated that it was to be used for for the henefit of Members.
