Patients suffering from developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) may develop progressive pain and loss of function from degenerative arthritis requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA). The Anatomic Medullary Locking (AML) Bantam femoral stem (DePuy, Warsaw, IN) is a smaller version of the parent stem, and is designed to address the unique challenges of reconstructing hips in patients with small femoral proportions and end-stage arthritis using cementless technique. The small proximal and distal geometry was designed to meet the needs of both DDH patients and other small-statured patients with narrow femoral canals.In the present study, we report a prospective, consecutive cohort of 25 primary total hip arthroplasties in 18 patients with DDH using this prosthesis. The intermediate to long-term outcome, complications and survivorship are reported with up to 18 years of follow-up (range, 4-18 years).
