We read with interest the article by Ren et al. [1], who describe the reversal of diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice (NOD mice), an animal model of type 1 diabetes, by in vivo lentiviral hepatic transduction with furin-cleavable human insulin. This study is of particular interest to us because we have recently published a gene therapeutic approach in the insulin-dependent LEW.1AR1-iddm rat model of autoimmune diabetes [2,3], which resulted in the permanent reversal of the diabetic state to normoglycaemia [4].
