In the 1950s, fishermen working in the coastal city of Minamata, Japan noticed the cats that frequented their docks behaving strangely. For no apparent reason, otherwise normal cats were spinning themselves in circles and, on occasion, leaping into Minamata Bay. So odd was these cats' behavior, that the fishermen gave them a name, "the suicide-prone group of dancing cats." Although the fishermen had no idea why the "suicidal cats" behaved as they did, the fisherman wondered if the appearance of the cats "did not portend misfortune."
