Fifteen Years of Progress: Interviews with Authors from the 2001 Journal of Health Administration Education Special Issue on the State of Online Education in Health Administration

Abstract: What will be the role of online education in 2030? The Journal of Health Administration Education published its first Special Issue in 2001. Its subject: “The State of Online Education in Health Administration Programs.” Fifteen years ago, that issue's guest co-editors recognized the emergence of online programs in health management education and solicited thought leaders to describe the status and type of distance education activities within their programs. This article presents excerpts from recent personal interviews with eight of the eleven original JHAE Special Issue authors, including both of the guest co-editors. Each contributor shares their current perceptions of online education, accreditation efforts, recent and significant educational trends, and remaining pedagogical challenges. The commentary is authentic, humorous, controversial, and definitely thought provoking. Of special interest are each contributor's strategic recommendations for the future of health management education. Introduction The most significant transformational change in higher education in the last 15 years has been the introduction and adoption of distance education (online) programs.
