Comparison of the osseous characteristics of medial femoral condyle and fibula flaps

The medial femoral condyle flap has usually been used as a pliable corticoperiosteal wafer in small osseous defects such as scaphoid nonunions. However, recent studies have demonstrated its usefulness as a semi-structural flap, including intermediate corticocancellous segments (Del Pinal et at., 2007; Pelzer et al., 2010), and very large flaps from 5 to 10 cm in length (Gaggl et al., 2008a; 2008b). The successful use of the medial femoral condyle in increasingly larger defects raises the possibility that it might supplant the free fibula vascularized bone donor site for the treatment of intermediate to large osseous defects. We have quantified the osseous characteristics of the medial femoral condyle and fibula and compared them. These data can provide guidelines for harvesting grafts according to the requirements of the osseous reconstruction.
