Reviewing papers for the Journal

In reviewing a paperforpublication, yourmain responsibility is to the journal: to maintain the high standards required for it to be rated as a top-grade scientific journal. However, you also have a responsibility to the author or authors, who have spent many months or even years on the work that resulted in the paper. In 1991 Virchel Wood, a hand surgeon from California, wrote an invited editorial for our journal entitled "An author's view: living with rejection." He cited his own experience and referred to two separate scientists whose work, originally rejected for publication, later won Nobel prizes. All reviewers should, to keep them humble, read Wood's article.
