An unusual case of multiple hand enchondromas

Dear Sir, Standard textbooks of hand surgery only mention Ollier's disease and Maffucci's syndrome in relation to multiple enchondromatosis (Athanasian, 2005). However, multiple enchondromas of the hand may be seen in several other rare conditions (Spranger et al., 1978) (Table 1). We describe an unusual case to increase the awareness of hand surgeons to other conditions in which multiple hand enchondromas may be seen. A nine-year-old boy presented with multiple enchondromas all over the body with severe involvement of both hands (Fig 1). The lesions had been noticed since infancy and had been growing slowly. The left index lesion had recently started to ulcerate with recurrent bleeding and this was the main reason for the presentation.
