We read with interest the paper by Ballal et al. in the August 2007 issue. Having also observed the surface contamination clearly illustrated, it is regular practice in our unit for the theatre porter to insert the limb for surgery into a large, clear plastic bag prior to exsanguinations in order to prevent potential cross-contamination between both patients and staff. This simple intervention does not appear to affect the function of the Rhys-Davies exsanguinator adversely and has the added bonus of reducing frictional forces, thereby facilitating application of the exsanguinator.
