Factitious disorders of the upper limb create an unusual problem for hand surgeons. We are occasionally obliged to deal with such cases, but the area of abnormality is not covered by any formal training we have received and, perhaps, the aptitudes that may pre-select surgeons for their speciality do not best suit the investigation and management of these cases.
