Although Dr. Goldsmith has a taste for exotic astronomy, he rigorously obeys the laws of physics. In fact, after he earned his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1969, he also acquired a J.D. degree and worked for two years as a tax attorney in San Francisco. He earlier held postdoctoral fellowships at Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently joined the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He did resign his post at Stony Brook in 1974 to become a highly successful, full-time astronomy popularizer. Since then, he has written numerous articles on astronomy for major publications, including Sky & Telescope, Astronomy, Natural History, Discover, and Science. He has authored, coauthored, or edited 18 books. He was a science consultant for Carl Sagan's Cosmos PBS television programs, and he followed that triumph as the science advisor for The Astronomers television series.
