Studies on the mortality in purebred indigenous, exotic and crossbred cattle indicate, that the Red Dane and Holstein Friesian purebred exotics had the highest mortality and the crossbreds with 75% Holstein Friesian inheritance were comparable with 50% crossbreds suggesting that crossbreds upto 75% Friesian inheritance can be maintained under the prevailing conditions. Seasonal variations as well as the variations in the mortality rate over different age groups call for improvements in the feeding and management of animals particularly during the first fortnight of the age of calves. Highest mortality due to digestive disorders and respiratory problems was noticed.
