Acute bovine pulmonary emphysema with acute subcutaneous emphysema in bullocks and its management - a clinical report.

Five steers in Maharashtra, India developed severe dyspnoea after a change of forage from dry grass to lush green pasture. Within 2 to 3 days, all the steers developed subcutaneous emphysema, characterized by visible swelling over the dorsal aspectof the chest and abdomen, subsequently descending to the lower parts of the thorax and abdomen. Four steers were treated with antibiotics, antihistamines and corticosteroids for 5 days, without any improvement in clinical condition. One of the 4 steers died on the 5th day. Monensin (200 mg) was administered intraruminally twice daily for 5 subsequent days. The respiratory distress was reduced within the next 2 days with corresponding improvement in the clinical condition. The subcutaneous emphysema started receding by the 10th day. The 5th steer was treated immediately with 200 mg of monensin, twice a day for 5 days. The subcutaneous emphysema in this animal receded completely within 3 days.
