Comparative morphometry on the vomero-nasal organ in mithun, yak and zebu

The vomero-nasal organ (organ of Jacobson) functions in the chemoreception of liquid borne compounds of low volatility. Gross morphological features of the organ was, studied by various authors in sheep (May, 1970; Kratzing, 1971 and Hare, 1975) in goat (Kumar et al., 1981) and in buffalo (Ester, 1972; Cooper and Bhatnagar, 1976 and Saksena and Chandra, 1980). However, no morphometrical studies had been done on-this organ in mithun and yak, except the reports on the physical characteristics of this two speceis (Borthakur, 1992; Verma and Prasad, 1994; Heli, 1996; Nivsarkar et al., 1997; Arora, 1998 and Gupta et al., 1999). Hence, the present study was undertaken to elucidate the same.
