Behavioural symptoms and conception in rural cows and buffaloes under tropical condition.

In a study involving 195 cows and 155 buffaloes, the signs of oestrus observed by villagers were recorded and related to subsequent conception after AI; it has been found previously that, especially in rural areas, animals are being inseminated whennot in oestrus. Bellowing and discharge of mucus was the most frequent indication seen by farmers (in 34.24% of the cows), and bellowing alone the second in cows (28.26%) and most frequent sign in buffaloes (35.92%). Other signs included mounting, reduced milk yield, and general restlessness. Other signs included mounting, reduced milk yield, and general restlessness. The highest conception rate (38.09%) was in cows inseminated 12-18 h after bellowing and mucus discharge, and in buffaloes (58.92%) inseminated after bellowing, mucus discharge and reduced milk yield.
