Histomorphological study on secondary lymphoid organs (spleen, sub-lumbar lymph node and Peyer's patches) of the Marwari sheep (Ovis aries)

Samples of spleen, sublumbar lymph nodes, and ileum (near the ileo-caecal junction) were collected at slaughter from 6 ram lambs, aged 4-6 months, and 10 adult rams, aged 12-13 months. Histological sections were stained by various techniques, and their morphology described in detail. In the spleen, the thickness of the capsule and trabeculae, and the diameter of the lymphatic nodules, and, in the lymph nodes, the thickness of the capsule and nodules, were consistently greater in the adults. The number of Peyer patches in a cross section of the ileum, however, was higher in the lambs (mean 48) than in the adults (mean 28).
