Effect of feeding different levels of protein on growth and feed efficiency in crossbred (Corriedale X Deccani) lambs.

When weaned at 90 days of age, 40 crossbred lambs were divided into groups of 8 and given feed containing 10, 12, 14, 16 or 18% of crude protein. The energy level of the diets was kept constant and Cenchrus ciliaris was given ad libitum as the solesource of roughage. At the end of the experimental period of 180 days, the average daily weight gain was found to be highest in the lambs given 14 and 16%, and feed efficiency was highest in the group given 14% crude protein. The average daily weight gain was higher in males (93-107 g) than in females (76-95 g).
