Pathogenesis of a new genotype infectious bronchitis virus isolated in chickens.

The sequence and pathogenesis of a field isolate (THA001) of Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) obtained during outbreaks in chickens in Thailand during 1997-2000 were studied. It was shown that THA001 shared 61-77 and 65-76% nucleotide and amino acid sequence identities, respectively, with NIBV in GenBank. Mortality rates and gross and histopathological lesions were higher in chickens experimentally infected at 2 days old compared to 14 days old. These results show that THA001 is a new genotype with a higher virulence in younger chickens.
