Salmonellosis in red eared slider turtles.

This study was conducted to investigate the cause of mortality in red-eared slider turtles at the Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bangalore, India. Carcasses of 32 turtles were subjected to postmortem examination. No apparent visible symptoms were observed in the turtles prior to death. However, postmortem examination showed acute haemorrhagic gastroenteritis with severe congestion and haemorrhages in the stomach and intestines. Bacteriological examination of the samples revealed growth of Salmonella species. This was further confirmed by IVMC biochemical tests. An excellent response to ofloxacin therapy was observed, with reduction of mortality in turtles.
