Tobacco has been making news in recent months as farmers and the board attempt to raise awareness of their plight. And while trying to gain media coverage and fight for the money promised by the province, several individuals have risen to the spotlight. Tobacco Farmers in Crisis (TFIC) was launched at a meeting in December that drew hundreds of people Its purpose is to get tobacco farmers the compensation they deserve. Ken Tota, a second-generation tobacco grower from Mount Pleasant, is the chair ofthe group's steering committee. He explained his group is not trying to compete with the board but is trying to do what the board cannot do (that) we can't and vice versa."
