Genetics of some important characters using line X tester analysis in muskmelon.

Sixty F1 hybrids involving 3 females, viz. M221, M225 and W321, and 20 males were produced in muskmelon (Cucumis melo) in a line X tester design. Eight economic characters contributing to earliness, fruit yield and sweetness were studied. W321 amonglines and H172 among testers were good general combiners for most of the studied characters. Among the crosses, M221 X N231, M225 X A102, M225 X M224, M225 X F143, W321 X M222 and W321 X N233 combined well to produce significant desirable SCA effects for days to harvest, yield per plot and total soluble solids percentage. The cross W321 X N233 outyielded Punjab Hybrid (control) by >50% and was also significantly earlier than Punjab Hybrid.
