Foraging behaviour and effect of Apis cerana pollination on fruit set and yield of Assam lemon (Citrus limon).

An experiment was conducted in Assam, India, from 2002/03 to 2004/05 to study the foraging behaviour and effect of honey bee pollination on fruit set and yield of Assam lemon. Bees visited the flower from 07.00 to 16.00 h while the peak period of foraging was between 10.00 and 11.00 h with 9.42+or-0.53 per minute and the frequency of flower visit was 13.26+or-0.62 per minute. The maximum yield of Assam lemon was obtained in bee pollination treatment (48.88 t/ha) against 32.89 t/ha in without bee pollination and 44.05 t/ha in open-pollination treatment. There was an 89.45% yield increase of Assam lemon in bee pollination treatment compared to without bee pollination..
