Orthogonal steel plated grillages are widely used in ship hulls, box-girder bridges, decks of offshore platforms etc., Offshore platforms and ship structures are subjected to hydrostatic, dynamic lateral- loads and shock loads. It is important to understand the dynamic plastic behaviour of orthogonal beam grillage structures. With this objective, a series of experimental and theoretical investigations have been carried out. This paper presents the results of these studies. Three types of steel orthogonal beam grillages are fabricated and tested. The strain rate influence on the constitutive relationship of steel has been established by testing using computer controlled UTM. The mechanical properties of steel are also determined This paper describes the development of the experimental set-up, method of testing, instrumentation set-up, PC-based data acquisition and processing. The clamped-clamped steel orthogonal beam grillage structures have been subjected to impact loads with instrumented impact hammer. The experimental results are compared with the predictions by finite element analysis.
