摘要

This paper presents the subgrade soil properties of a runway pavement to assess their relation to formation of cracks on the pavement surface. Boih laboratory and field tests were performed. The subgrade soils are silty clays of low to medium plasticity and possess a low degree of shrinking and expansion. Due to low volume change characteristics of the subgrade soil. It appeared that the origin of cracks on the pavement surface was not due to swelling and shrinkage of underlying soil as anticipated earlier. In place density tests showed a good degree of compaction of the subgrade soil which indicates that formation of cracks is not due to deformation of the underlying soil.
