摘要

Not everything dies back in winter, thankfully. Certain plants keep a leafy presence, helping to dispel winter gloom and offering an important refuge for hibernating insects. In severe weather, such *wintergreen' foliage (see p40) can get frayed around the edges, but it recovers quickly once the weather improves. There are aromatic and fleshy-leaved silvers weathered by sun, or early-flowering woodlanders waiting for spring sunshine. Others form lush rosettes, and there are grass-like plants, too. Some have leathery leaves, others are ferny, but all add texture and form in the bleak midwinter.
