ASK ANY EXPAT AND THEY will tell you that one of the things that they miss most about home is food. The strong link between food and feeling safe and secure is born in childhood and has a sharp poignancy if you suddenly find yourself living in a different country halfway across the world. Transplanted people, like plants, often take a long while to settle, and growing and eating native food is, as many doctors working in mental health will testify, a powerful way of overcoming fear, depression and anxiety as well as creating a sense of belonging.
