The biological sciences that have supported fruit growers in maintaining commercial levels of control of major pests have served them well for decades. EMR's Professor Jerry Cross has kept the dynamics of pest incidence under constant review, recognising that changes in the armoury available for their control, together with changes in the range of cultivars grown and the orchard systems employed, will likely impact on the range of pests within the orchard. In reviewing two relatively new, and one old, enemies at the BIFGA Technical Day, held in January at Bewl Water near Lamberhurst, Kent, he explained current thinking on their controls. "Codling moth control retains the use of pheromone traps to monitor the incidence of adult male moths present within the orchard," he said.
