In this book Professor Rodger has collated contributions from leading Australian and Canadian researchers and theorists. With a focus on occupational performance, a clear distinction is drawn between this 'top-down' occupation-focused approach and 'bottom-up' deficit-focused interventions. The case is made for occupation-centred, top-down approaches for chronic childhood conditions. Bottom-up approaches lie within a reductionist model best suited to acute medical settings and the author argues that we do not have the empirical evidence to assume that the acquisition of motor, cognitive and affective components will lead directly to successful occupational performance.
