Strategic Management for Sustainable Development of Mining Industry: Relevance to Indian Coal Sector

Mining being the one of the Prime industry has recognized the need to respond to the concept of "SustainableDevelopment" which refers to "development that meets the needs of present without compromising the abilityof future generations to meet their own needs. For the mining industry to make a positive contribution towardssustainable development it is very much necessary to address the integration of all major aspects of sustainabledevelopment, which include proper mineral exploitation with proper planning, economic aspects, social andenvironmental issues including utilization of generated solid wastes through "zero waste" concepts and finallyutilization of resources of mother earth in a fruitful manner. It has become essential to evaluate the presentpolicies and plans; management of industries and schemes; and quality control and evaluation of deposits in aneffective and planned manner. The outcome of this will help in adopting appropriate corrective measures forensuring long-term sustainability of mining industries.Coal is non-renewable resources. There are a series of ingenuous problems when they are exploited on a largescale. Therefore, studying on the sustainable development of coal industry plays an important role. Strategicplanning & management is an effective way to realize sustainable development. This paper presents authorsview on sustainable development of mining industry in context of Indian coal sector, finally proposes someeffective and feasible measures of sustainable development based on future projections.
