摘要

This paper presents an appraisal of mine accidents, growth of mining activities, place wise distribution of average daily employment and production in coal mines and overview of cause wise and place wise fatal accidents in coalmines in India. Various approaches for evaluation of strata control problems with special reference to underground activities are presented. Need of geotechnical investigations in mines, purpose of instrumentation, and a case study of application of numerical models along with the comparison of model studies with field observations in a typical underground mine was discussed. In view of the significant level of accidents due to roof and side falls in Indian coal mines, emphasis is made on the urgent need to create awareness to the front line supervisors/practicing engineers on the recent trends in geotechnical investigations, strata control technologies for application in coal mines, and on the organization of strata control cell.
