Knowing the theory is the foundation of correct shoeing. First of all, you have to have precise knowledge of equine anatomy, and especially the anatomy of the foot. Next, you have to be able to assess the various elements of the horse's limb conformation and gaits, as well as their repercussions on shoeing. In many articles on shoeing the authors talk about a correct trim, a correct fit, and setting the shoes correctly. But what, then, do they mean by "correct"? Certain ready-made expressions are hard to stamp out. A study by John and Monique Craig (California) that was published in Issue 114 of The Farriers Journal showed quite clearly that it would be good to challenge some of these assertions. The study's findings corroborate the observations and experience that I have made and had in the course of my career as a farrier, which is to say, more than thirty years already.
