Mittel Deutschland: from rich past to promising biotech future

The area of Germany that is collectively known as "Mittel Deutschland" actually lies towards the very east of the current German Federal Republic. The area is made up of three separate states, namely Saxony Anhalt, the Free State of Saxony and the Free State of Thuringia. Saxony actually has borders with Poland and the Czech Republic. The Mittel Deutschland states, along with the other eastern states of Berlin-Brandenburg and Mecklenburg Vorpommern made up the former German Democratic Republic during the Cold War period.
