Locating and Preserving Historic Camellia Varieties

Florence Crowder of Denham, Louisiana is "beating the drum" when it comes to preserving historic camellias. For the camellia show year beginning in the fall of 2008 she offered a 25 dollar award for the best bloom in a class for camellias originated in the 19th century. Many clubs and societies added this new category to their shows and Florence began to learn where these camellias could be found. Florence is very pleased with the response she has received for this project. In another endeavor to preserve the sometimes lost camellias in addition to the known historical ones, Florence collected scions of more than 100 varieties, primarily 19th century cultivars from several gardens in France in 2008. She shared these with ACS for the collection at the headquarters in Massee Lane Garden in Fort Valley, Georgia and with other gardens.
