The 5th International Symposium on Interactionsof Soil Minerals with Organic Components andMicroorganisms (ISMOM) was held in Pucon, Chile,24-28 November 2008. This symposium was the 2ndInter-Congress Conference of Commission 2.5 SoilPhysical/Chemical/Biological Interfacial Reactions ofthe International Union of Soil Sciences. The theme ofthis symposium was on soil-root-microbe interactionsand the impact on the transformations and fate ofnutrients and pollutants in the ecosystem. This sym-posium successfully brought together environmentalchemists, mineralogists, microbiologists, ecologists,toxicologists, and soil scientists to share information,identify gaps in knowledge, and stimulate research onthe physicochemical and biological interfacial interac-tions in soil and related environments, with specialfocus on the soil-root interface (rhizosphere).
