You have to grow volume or grow niche in the glasshouse industry to survive in the current climate. And it was the latter that Gary Griffiths of Nutbourne Nursery chose to bring him success in the tomato sector. But it wasn't always that way reports Adrian Tatum.Originally a grower of classic round tomatoes, it wasn't until he took a long hard look at the family business a while back that he realised he was being paid the same for his tomatoes as he was fifteen years ago. It was time for change. Now, he and thefamily run a very different business and it is a fantastic story to tell. Mr Griffiths has carved out a niche in the sector by growing unusual and rare tomato varieties many of which he mixes up and sells in different sized boxes aimed predominately at the catering and hospitality sectors via outlets such as New Covent Garden Market. The business has built itself an impressive reputation as being one of the sector's leading speciality growers.
