Two extremes of practical emergence trap for reared Coleoptera

During the course of regular fieldwork I have had a passing interest in obtaining material reared from various media including fungal fruiting bodies, deadwood and litter siftings. There are countless designs for emergence traps with a number on the open market. I had some very specific requirements and found these only satisfied by two disparate home-made designs. For each extreme of rearing media the container requirements are quite different. I developed one very robust setup intended to contain even the most ambitious wood chewing species, the other a more general purpose, practical and cheap design. The basic design in each case was tubular and used the attraction of emergent insects to daylight to entice them towards the awaiting preservative.
