An occurrence of Plagionotus arcuatus (Linnaeus) (Cerambycidae)in Surrey

On 14 February 2009 an e-mail was received by the Royal Horticultural Society's Members'Advisory service with a clear picture of Plagionotus arcuatus (Linnaeus). Two adults werefound inside a house in Frimley, Surrey SU8858. This is a first record for Surrey. The larvalstage of P. arcuatus is associated with the sapwood of oak Quercus, beech Fagus, hornbeamCarpinus, cherry Prunus and willow Salix spp (Hyman, 1992; Hickin, 1975). Further contactwith the enquirer gave no additional useful information as to the possible origin of the beetles.This species appears on the checklist of British beetles (Duff, 2008); however it is consideredextinct and possibly never resident in Great Britain (Hyman, 1992). All 20th century and manyolder records are as a result of importation (Hyman, 1992) and it is assumed that this is thecase with this occurrence.
