Acrotona convergens Strand (Staphylinidae) new to Ireland

On 22 May 2003, six specimens of Acrotona Thomson were collected fromCloghballymore Lough in County Galway. All six specimens were initially identifiedas A. pygmaea (Gravenhorst) and a male and a female were retained, but on laterexamination, it was discovered that, while the female was correctly identified, themale was referable to A. convergens (Strand), a species previously recorded fromneither Ireland nor Britain. Critical examination of further Acrotona specimens in mycollection has revealed a female taken in County Roscommon just a couple of daysearlier.
