The papers from the Netherlands1 and India2 on long-term follow-up of surgical therapy for painful chronic pancreatitis have some features in common. Both have follow-up of over 6 years, with a preponderance of men (69.0 and 83 per cent respectively) and a lower than normal association with alcohol abuse: 48.3 and 52 per cent respectively compared with 65-75 per cent in most of the published literature. The operative mortality rate (1.3 and 3 per cent) and rate of major surgical complications (36.8 and 42 per cent) are also similar.
