Guiding their way: assisting refugee health professionals

Refugee health professionals face many obstacles in resuming their careers in the UK. From initial orientation, improving their communication skills and sitting the necessary professional examinations, through to obtaining sufficient clinical experience and securing employment, refugee health professionals (RHPs) require support and guidance. A number of initiatives to assist RHPs, and in particular refugee doctors, have been developed in the UK as a result of a heightened awareness of the increasing number of skilled asylum seekers and refugees entering Britain. This has coincided with a demand for additional staffing resources in Britain's National Health Service (NHS), with The NHS Plan, published in 2000, highlighting the fact that the biggest constraint for the NHS was a shortage of human rather than financial resources.
