Coal reserves in China are estimated to be as high as 5.9 trillion tons—i.e., over 94% of total domestic fossil energy resources. Though China is actively developing windmills and solar energy, coal will still be the country's major source of energy in the next half century. Due to the declining domestic economy, coal production decreased by 2.5% for the first time since 2000 (Hu 2015). It is also a milestone year for China's Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) plant construction, since four mega-ton commercial scale plants were finally constructed inside China before the end of 2014.
