Diesel engines are widely used worldwide for transportation and other essential applications. Diesel exhaust emissions may include carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), particulates (or soot), aerosols, etc., which are detrimental to health and the environment. Increasingly strict regulations require advanced emission control equipment, such as catalytic converters, filters, traps, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units. Under the oxidizing conditions required to oxidize CO and HC, much of the nitric oxide (NO) gets oxidized to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which is reduced to NO in a soot trap (Equations 1 and 2), and both NO and NO2 are reduced to nitrogen in an SCR unit (Equation 3).
