In catalysis, metal oxides are used either as a support for highly active metal clusters or as a catalyst itself (pure or supported on another oxide). Non-reducible oxide supports such as SiO2, Al2O3 or MgO are generally considered to have little influence on the catalytic activity of the metal catalyst. Recent studies, however, have revealed that metal cluster growth, as well as reactivity, is strongly related to the presence of point defects on the surface of the oxide and that oxide size and morphology are crucial parameters of oxide reactivity.
