The global chemical industry accounts for approximately 7% of global industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 10% of global energy demand. Catalysts play a role in 90% of those chemical processes. There is potential for advancements in catalytic technology to reduce energy use within the chemical industry by 13 exajoules and GHG emissions by 1 gigatonne of carbon per year by 2050. Highlighting this potential is the focus behind Technology Roadmap: Energy and GHG Reductions in the Chemical Industry via Catalytic Processes, co-produced by IEA, DECHEMA and ICCA.
