Mining the Packer Target

Two hundred fifty ranchers from nine states know more about the quality of beef they are producing after participating in the 1994-95 Texas A&M Ranch to Rail program. They also learned about the economics of feeding part of their calf crop and the factors that influence value beyond the weaned calf phase of beef production. Overall, it was financially rewarding with an average net return of 64.66 dollar per head for the 2,873 head enrolled in the information feedback program. However, the ranch returns per head varied from +209.61 dollar to -112.34 dollar with 86 percent of the ranches having a positive net return over the value of the calf at weaning. Other parameters measured showed similar variations as shown in Table 1.
